"Always, Already There: How George E. Lewis Turned The Miriam Makeba auditorium in HKW into the chamber of a heart."

In ‘Always, Already There’ (4.-10.11.2024 )Haus der Kulturen der Welt; Lewis curated afrodiasporic music from far and wide in this week long incubator project that felt both like a gathering and a sending out.

In this illustration I wanted to focus on a piece by Elaine Mitchener entitled ‘bloodcirclesearwhistles’ (2021) performed by Com Choir Berlin in which the choir moved up and down the aisles, and around the audience speak-singing-whispering meditations on the circulation of blood. A close and intimate presence of what has always been there and will go on from here.
