Neues Museum Berlin
2024 / personal project
I wanted to explore textures in illustrations of buildings, and what better subject matter than the Neues museum whose careful reconstruction under David Chipperfield pairs neutral new materials around the elements of the building that had been damaged in war. New plaster sits beside blackened stone pillars riddled with bullet holes. Old decaying murals and new floors. The contrast is beautiful. I wanted to take it a step further in the illustration by by introducing a colour. The building very much sits in the neutrals palette but the colour helped me draw out the dialogue of the contrast and multiple histories contained in the building. The museum showcases Egyptian artifacts, but the building contained enough in it's own walls as material for illustration.
